😍REVIEW Brilliant..... made me laugh, so I share it with you;
Daphne, Thank you for offering an alternative to the bland, identikit staleness of chain hotels. The highlight was having a bath in the open. You and this experience proves the great tradition of British eccentricity lives on! Chris, Paul & Frank. ❤Thank you , you have captured the spirit, it does say so much about this place....
Surprise!!!! now we have a real Nordic, wood fired Sauna...... with a freezing whiskey barrel to dip into........... so to relax in between your relaxations..... |
dream big, believe in your dreams, be true, be authentic, be generous, think about others, be patient, be diligent, be mindful............ armoured with these tools, you are bound to succeed

Very excited... We are ready to declare this place an eco site for glamping holidays in Herefordshire!!! We need your help, of course...
This is an eco-site We hope that as you have booked to stay with us, this means you care deeply about the planet and her resources. We ask all guests to come prepared , we are providing two bins to recycle your food waste, which we are very happy to deal with, we are also providing bin bags for you to take back all your other waste, like bottles and cans and plastic and wrappings.....
We basically expect you to take back with you all the rubbish you have created, besides food waste, teabags and coffee grinds, paper and cardboard.
The drinking water here is excellent, so you can fill your water bottles.

The best travel discoveries of 2017 – chosen by Guardian writersThis year
the Guardian Travel team enjoyed a Hooghly in India, meditated in Bali and hitched a wagon in the Wye valley – among other unforgettable experiences
A great glamping spot near the Welsh border, New Inn Brilley is a small guesthouse – a lovely two-hour walk from Hay-on-Wye – with several wagons and cabins in its magical garden. Tibetan peace flags are strung between the trees with fairy lights and signs with Buddhist teachings all along the little pathways. We stayed in an old Gypsy Wagon with a woodburner, surrounded by decking with an outdoor kitchen built of scrap wood, and a big outdoor bathtub. It was a bit like staying in a deconstructed shack, but how often can you have a hot bath with a view across the Wye valley?
• Rooms from £70 a night, glamping from £60, newinnbrilley.co.uk

'New Inn Brilley in Herefordshire wins an Alastair Sawday B&B award as one of the kind for being -unique, authentic and sometimes a little bit quirky' -.thrilled and took me totally by surprise..... I love what I do, for me what is satisfying is, when my Guests are really happy with what they find here, something more than just accommodation.. Very often I am told 'it is so peaceful here' well that makes it all for me... Thank you Alastair for giving me the opportunity!
Sarah reviewed New Inn Brilley — 5 star Beautiful little retreat to relax and unwind. Very different and quirky at the same time of feeling so homely and welcoming. Views are out of this world and feels like a million miles from the stresses of day to day life whilst only being a short walk/drive from local amminities. Would highly recomend the mother earth and would love to return. Was able to charge my electric car too with ease. |
Welcome to New Inn Brilley! What's going on?The ever present is changing.

The New Inn Karma Dechen Choling is situated in the tiny Herefordshire village of Brilley on the Welsh borders. This 18th century stone house, with its extensive grounds and stream running through it, enjoys stunning views of the Black Mountains, the beautiful Wye valley and the Brecon Beacons. A former rural inn, the main house is adjoined by a self-contained suite and a meditation hall.
-There are two double rooms The Pink and The Yellow with their own shared bathroom available for bed and breakfast in the main house. -The adjoining suite sleeping 4 is also available for Self-catering Accommodation. -There now is a new addition, The Wagon Over The Valley, with its unobstructed views onto the Valley and Mountains beyond. -And now another one! The rising Sun, 'A simply divine place to sit in peace and stare across the valley from your own boardwalked camp...' -Angels and Mother Earth are the new two recent additions -Now lets not forget a newer addition a lovely 60's Caravan 'On The Road Bijou' A glimpse into our outdoor spacesIt has happened again!! Again I had hard time to believe and all took place like a fairy tale.... magic does happen..... please click on badge to see more of the AWARDS
'Our judges were looking a place that is unlike anywhere else, somewhere impossibly comparable. The owners, ideally, are part of making the place so unusual. The judges were looking for somewhere packed with personality and defiantly different, that has taken risks and gone against convention in being utterly itself. ' Text by Canopy&Stars
'The higgledy piggledy, bohemian nature of ‘New Inn Brilley’, is all part of the charm. Expect ladybirds on your pillowcase and hens doing laps of your cabin – they were there first, after all. Expect no mod-cons and definitely don’t expect anything to match! Daphne is a relentless creative spirit, constantly collecting and then building new dwellings. Her ancestry can be traced back to the Wombles so you might find a pile of wood or perhaps a rogue bath-tub ready to come together into a new space. If you’re still interested in paying a visit, and we urge you to do so, then you’ll love staying with her as much as we do!' |
The Art of Composting ToiletsWater and Natural Resources Consultancy ServiceWe have many compost toilets here on site. Through the years I have mostly built them myself, tried different ones with straw bales, the ones that you move just a lap to a new hole , the ones with uring separator that I have deviced (not very successful ... went back to how it was) .. then time comes to harvest it, it is a big satisfaction, to see that actually it is not at all a foul thing as people imagine it to be, it turns into a lovely rich soil that goes around trees and shrubs and flowers...
Some are terribly suspicious about compost toilets , so I decided to knock on the door of experts CAT Centre of Alternative Technology, they have their science of the matter, after a long and careful assessment period of measuring, digging and digging again etc. etc.. they have endorsed The New Inn Brilley toilets of the Wagon the Rising Sun and the Angels, (the other ones are way up the other end of the ground) It is comforting to hear from the experts that they do not in any way interfere with any water ways , springs or wells... Here for you to have a read , interesting... ps.the urine separators are already installed, the came all the way from Sweden :) The percolation value of the soil at each compost toilet location is 48Vp, and groundwater levels do not lie within one metre of the base of the chambers. The site is not in a groundwater protection zone. "Your percolation values are very favourable. BEWARE! Is this for you?
'Inconveniences of the countryside for a non country person’
This Place The New Inn at Brilley, has been a pub until after the second World War, and a small holding, they at one stage had quite a number of pigs and poultry. The lady that owned it for over 45 years before handing it over to me, Mrs Bradshaw, was a very clever lady, collected rare plants that today again I am surprised with what comes up and blooms each season, and I thank Mrs Bradshaw for these beautiful display of colours.. I have also inherited quite a few sheds, a lot of old timber, corrugated sheets, old latches, old bottles that I have found in diggings (as it was a pub they had a lot! of bottles that they buried as foundations in places)
I love the character of all this old building materials that lends itself to the creative mind, so I rarely throw away anything, there comes a time, the piece of corrugated and the timber and the brick gather together to perhaps make a little scoop for a mother hen…
So this place is not the perfectly designed, minimalistic, with perfect paths (no you do need wellies in bad weather, it is muddy!!!) clean cut lawns, and all in geometrical order, NO it is very far from that, it is wild, it is natural, there will be the slippery path in places though, having said that, we do of course want the first timer also to enjoy, so we have eased path ways and laid some gravel, so you are not stuck in mud… and if you come across a piece of corrugated lying down by the hedge, please do not be shocked, this is the rare remains of an authentic country living.. Oh I forgot, I must put this in, in season there will be a lot of stinging nettles as well because it is a very fertile ground, and very good for you in many ways... There was someone that complained the other week that there were a lot of slugs.......!!?? whom are we complaining to??? when its wet there will be slugs, worms, many other creatures, I have come face to face with a badger.... and a small deer, early in the morning it was so special..... all these are part of life.... that some of us have forgotten
And country living was not what we today spoil ourselves with, running water, hot tubs, hot showers, the fridge, clean dwellings, ironed sheets, all nicely prepared, breakfast baskets, all like a dream…. We want to live a dream, and even with this dream some of us are not satisfied, and want more…. more and more and unfortunately the ‘more’ is not the way to happiness….
I thank my lucky stars, I am so fortunate to be witnessing this beauty, the natural beauty, the peace that this surrounding offers, I thank Mrs Bradshaw for handing down to me this treasure - she had said to me ‘ we worked hard, we were poor, but we were ever so happy’ from here she moved not far to an amazing Victorian house by the river that she had inherited, but she visited the New Inn very often as her heart was here she used to say.
I am happy to share this experience that is very special to me, with others, but I want others to appreciate and to love it, please if you are hesitating and wondering if it is for you, then probably it is not what you are looking for,
I am not running this place as a business, I want to share and give something precious, and the business is the side effect of my way of life….
Please ask any questions you can think of , but be certain that this is the type of place you want to come to.
Thank you
Daphne

'The way people treat us is their karma, the way we react is our own' - Kyabje Trulshik Rinpoche
I tried to give an honest description of this place however, I really want to get across the feel of how it is here, as it is... so you are not disappointed with what you find…
I fell in love with this place, it inspired me to dream and create many diverse, cosy living spaces, whilst I carried on developing my spiritual side.
It is a reflection of the gipsy, nomad, traveller, earthy nature loving peasant and nest making sides of myself and discovering the infinity of our potential.
All these corners, whatever we may call them 'glamping, self contained accommodation, outdoor experience'.. it is not about trying to make statement of perfection nor of glamour, the luxury here is being as authentic and simply faithful to what it is...
The Elements, Earth Water Fire Air and Space in harmony….
We are the elements, we need to connect to nature, at least every now and then so to be reminded who we are..
So, what do we need to be well?... the elements that nature offers us, with a bit of comfort? a log fire? good food, hot showers and a hot tub!, a good friend, peaceful surrounding, may be the sunshine, maybe the wind, maybe rain or snow, with the gratitude to experience to witness this temporary fleeting manifestation.
Well if all this makes sense to you then you will find here what you are looking for…..
And important for me, I want to say, after having lived in many different countries in different places,... for the first time in my life I feel at home here, this is my home, and only if you think you will be happy here then, I really want to share it with you ….
I also want to say, I will engage in every effort to make you feel at home and comfortable, because this is what makes me happy, so please let me know when there is something that is not quite right for you, I will do my best to correct it,
but you have to let me know...
Lots LOVE
